Meet on domestic violence in the city

A capacity building programme on Domestic Violence Act, 2005, was recently organised by the Integrated Rural Artisans’ Development Organisation (IRADO), a premier North East-based NGO.
According to information, organisation chairperson Bonojit Talukdar explained the objective of the program saying awareness among women in general and rural artisans in particular about the Act was a must.
He said domestic violence has adversely affected artisans, weavers and their productivity. Social activist and head of Nirmal Ashroy, an NGO, MR Kalsi said in the North East, violence against women has been seen.
Another social activist Rupasree Bora Bordoloi said to save oneself from domestic violence, measures have to be taken which include money in hand, taking refuge in a safe place within the house and staying in touch with organisations which are involved in helping women.
Psychologist, Dr Sangeeta Dutta, said the need of the hour is to make women aware about the existence of the Act. She regretted that in rural and remote areas, illiterate women have to silently suffer domestic violence as she does not know about the Act.
She said financial freedom, education and awareness is required by women as it is found particularly in villages that women do not earn and are totally dependent on their husbands.
