Second version of Salwa Judum in Manipur
In a desperate attempt to counter insurgency in Manipur, the state government has decided to arm and train 500 people of two villages - Heirok and Chanjing - to protect themselves from rebels. They would be provided with guns and motorbikes to defend themselves against militants.
In the Land of Jewels, innocent lives have paid the price for too long in Manipur. After huge uproar against the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), it’s now the turn of the people to show their muscle power to protect their lives from insurgency.
Manipur has become a hotspot for militants with the maximum number of insurgent outfits in the country. The lack of economic developemnt can be attributed to this phenomenal growth. Over the years the government in Manipur has failed miserably to bring peace and prosperity. Now people are paying the price for lack of development in the state.
The success of this new experiment is crucial for the people in Manipur as it’s a matter of their security. Yet, it will depend to what extent people are willingly to come out of militancy.
For years, if both the central and state armed forces have failed to counter insurgency in the state , then there is no point that by arming another five-hundred men with .303 rifle and motorbikes will have little impact. Rather, government should recruit more young people in its state armed forces which will have a long term positive impact as well it would better the economic conditions of the people. It’s high time to learn that Salwa Judum in Chattisgarh has failed miserably to protect the innocent lives from naxalites.
