Sonia stresses relevance of Sankardeva; gives away awards
Congress president and UPA chairman Sonia Gandhi on Friday says the saint Sankardeva an embodiment of principle besides being a torch bearer of a major movement in Assam. She said it while she was giving away the coveted Sankardeva Award to Vaishnavite scholar Dr Keshavananda Deva Goswami and noted journalist B G Vergese at a function organized at the Rabindra Bhawan.
Giving away the prestigious Sankardeva award to veteran scholar in satriya culture Dr Keshavananda Deva Goswami and noted journalist B G Vergese at a function in the Rabindra Bhawan, Among others, the award also carries a cheque of Rs 3 lakh, a showl, a citation, a gold medal and some others. Receiving the award veteran journalist B G Vergese said he was indeed happy to have received this coveted award.
Satriya culture scholar Dr Keshavananda Dev Goswami said it’s right for everyone to take Sankardeva’s teachings and principles beyond the country. He also stressed the role of the government to spread the message of the saint across the globe.
The award was introduced by the Asom Gana Parishad government in 1986 and so far 23 personalities have received it.
