Flood threatens to wash away Kaziranga; KNP ready to contain the fury

There is flood waters inside the Kaziranga National Park forcing its authorities to adopt a set of arrangements to avert major disaster in the time of flood. According to information, the surging waters of the near by tributaries of the mighty Brahmaputra are spilling into te abode of rare wild animals posing a serious threat to the national park.

Flood waters have already submerged Rangamotoria, Moklung, Muwamari, Chahola beel areas in the Agoratoli range besides some other low laying areas in Aaria and Kohora, Aarimoura and Bagori.

With a view to containing the situation, the authorities have already rushed 26 forest guards from Karbi Anglong district, an assistant forest conservator with a ranger on deputation to contain the situation. Apart from this, 6 forest guards from Sonitpur, 14 from Jorhat, 5 from Golaghat, 10 from Nagaon, 9 from Hojai have been rushed to man the national park in the time of flood .

Meanwhile, a good number of rhinos and deers are leaving for the safe Karbi hills through the Kanchanjuri corridor by crossing the National Highway 37 as flood waters are gradually surging inside the park. Checking gates have been set up in the corridors to ensure safe passage to the marooned animals. Meanwhile, Kaliabor and Bokkhat administration have promulgated 144 CRPC on the National Highway from Bokakhat to Jakhalanandha to restrict the plying of vehicles beyond 20 kilometre per hour in speed. If need be, the KNP authority is all set to set up forest camp outside the park. On the other hand, the rescue and rehabilitation camp of the park is kept on alert in view of the flood situation.

On the other hand, an elaborate arrangement is on the cards to deal with the situation with 116 small boats, 8 machine boats besides three speed boats. But the small boats, mostly, are old and nor well equipped.

Notably, several wild animals lost their lives in flood, some others are crushed to death by speeding vehicles while they cross the national highway 37 to get rid of floods.
