Railway seeks security, says militants targeting projects

The Railways have taken Assam's volatile law and order issue with the Union Home Ministry and seek adequate security for its employees. According to information, the ministry has written a letter written to Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, and expressed grave concern over the militant threat to the railway projects and the recruits.

Work on the crucial Lumding-Silchar gauge conversion project in Assam is forced to remain disrupted  due to reports on attack. The work has been disrupted at all the sites following insurgent attacks in a number of projects.  Two workers were killed and another injured when the militants opened fire on a labour camp site near Migrandisa railway station in Assam on Monday.

Notably, the attack came a day after eight workers employed by a contractor in the Lumding project in Assam were killed by militants on Sunday. On Saturday last, militants opened indiscriminate firing in Wadrengdisa, also in Assam. A railway engineer involved in Kumarghat-Agartala new line project in Tripura was kidnapped and a contractor's staff was killed by militants on April 26.
