Dhemaji flood situation unchanged; alert in Dihiri & Holdunga

The flood situation in north Assam’s Dhemaji district is remaining unchanged. It could be deteriorating further in view of the continuing rains that have been lashing the district for the last several hours. The authorities are sounded alert apprehending breach of the embankment at Dihiri and Holdunga of the river Jiadhol which could be a disaster for more than 200 villages. Official sources told Assam Times, Water resources department is closely monitoring the situation and is taking a slew of short term measures to avoid the devastating situation.

Meanwhile, several organisations have called for a 12 hour Dhemaji district bandh on Saturday demanding government steps to rehabilitate the flood affected people. Moreover, the Asom Gana Parishad will also to stage dharna on Saturday to raise the same demands in the district. Notably, the situation came following the breach of a portion of embankment by the river Jiadhol on Wednesday at Samarajan forcing the closure of the National Highway 52 in the district.
