Assam flood situation continues to remain grave

The over all flood situation in Assam remains critical with the flood waters of the mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries are spilling into some more areas. Lakhs of people marooned after the breach of the Matmoira dyke in Lakhimpur district are still staying in the makeshift camps and relief and rescue operations are in progress. But the rescue operation is facing a great deal of difficulties due to lack of adequate number of boats. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday visited the flood affected areas and took stock of the situation. Talking to reporters Gogoi admitted that the government could not take precautionary measures in time.
The flood waters came to ravage the area hours after the Matmora dyke breached on July 23 in three portions.

This has resulted in this flood that ravages right from Dhakuwakhana in Lakhimpur to Majuli in Jorhat district where lakhs of people are reeling under the flood. On the other hand, in majuli also the situation is grave where the affected people are taking shelter in the make shift camps.

On the other hand, several parties and organisations greeted the Chief Minister with protest by waving black flags for his miserable failure to address the flood problem. Some students also shouted slogans asking the Chief Minister to go back.
