Gauhati HC asks govt to order CBI probe onto secret killing case

The Gauhati High Court has asked the Assam government to order a CBI probe into the killing of Mitradev Mahanta, who is said to be a victim of the secret killings that rocked the erstwhile AGP-led government.

Mahanta, who owned a vernacular magazine Pratyay, was killed on September 24, 1997 at Beltola while he was on his way to his residence.

According to allegation, Dispur police registered the case No 708/1997 and filed a chargesheet and washed its hands off. That too without any statement from those who lodged the first information report.

Mitradev’s father Premkanta Mahanta moved the Gauhati High Court with a writ petition four years back and the court of Justice Pranay Kumar Mushahary on Thursday who was hearing the case asked the Government to hand over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation within a period of one month. The court further said the investigation agency must file the chargesheet with six months.
