Life term for Varun’s murderer
Guwahati high court on Friday ordered lifetime imprisonment to the killer of a nine year old child Varun Sandilya in Guwahati on 22 January 2001. Anupam Das, who used to live in a two room rented part house owned by Varuns father in their campus and killed the child after allegedly sexual molestation on him and cut his body into parts and hided the torso under his bed and head in a trunk. The next day police recovered the corpse following a missing entry by his father. A case has been lodged in Geetanagar police station killed was forwarded to judicial custody after a detailed investigation. But few days later Anupam managed to flee from police custody while he was brought to the court for regular hearing. Since then he managed to disguise himself in Manipur’s capital city Imphal in forged identity and till Varun father traced him on 14th September 2006, caught and then handed over to Geetanagar police. Police lodged one more case against him and forwarded to judicial custody. On 14th November 2006, on the Childs Day a single member bench of high court ordered death sentence for Aupam terming it to be a rarest rare case. The order was challenged in two member bench. Today Chief justice J Salameswar and justice Hareswar Baruah passed final verdict on the appeal reducing penalty to a life time imprisonment.
