Where Modi magic hardly works
Come April 24. Nagaon is all set to the Lok Sabha polls along with 5 other seats. But who will have the last laugh? Poll pundits have yet to jump in to a conclusion. Parts of the country are in the deep grip of Modi wave. But will it save the BJP in Nagaon? The picture is hazy. The things in the crucial Lok Sabha seat have gone topsy turvy.
Three time MP Rajen Gohain now no longer enjoy the same degree of veneration as it was fifteen years ago. Anti-incumbency factors start working. Bulk of the populace are averse to elect him again. That’s why, all worries seem to have bubbled up for Gohain. Congress poll managers are leaving no stone unturned to make a dent into the BJP stronghold.
The ruling party gets wind of a bright spot for Jonjunali Baruah in Nagaon. Who will stymie her prospect? Is AIUDF strong enough for it? Will AGP do it? Never. Hindu voters, mostly, will not prefer AIUDF while some others in large number have been displeased with AGP.
New voters talk of change. But wont it touch BJP or Rajen Gohain? That’s the reason of worry for the sitting MP. The GenX voters find Gohain nothing but callous. It suggests a sea change in the attitude of voters, especially among the new ones. The college goers call Gohain a big failure. Participating in a survey conducted by a vernacular daily, a degree student rued that the BJP MP has done precious little to check flood and erosion in Morigaon district. He often blame it on the state government and washes his hand off, said some other students.
A Lumding College professor is displeased at his 15 year long performance and charged him with misutilizing MPLAD fund to the tune of cores of rupees during his tenure. “The option is AIUDF,” said the teacher.
However, some people of the constituency have decided to cast their vote for the congress candidate for changes. According to some political analysts, there would be a tough fight in the constituency among BJP, Congress and AIUDF.
To cap it all, Gohain, can win. But not with flying colours. A huge challenge awaits him. Congress is trying to wrest the seat. The complaints of cash distribution are likely to mar the prospect. AIUDF finds it a herculean task to resist BJP and Congress.

The Assam wing of the Students’ Federation of India(SFI) staged symbolic protestat Dighalipukuripar, Guwahati on June 21 against the UGC’s recent decision to hold NET once in a year. The students’ organization rued that if the UGC implements its recent decision regarding the NET then a large number of students would loss chance to appear in the exam. Terming the move as disastrous for the book publishers of the state, GiriPad Devchodhury, proprietor of Bani Prakash urged the government to change its order.
