Turn out sets record

A huge turn out seems to have set record in the third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls in six constituencies on Thursday.

The average percentage polling in all the six constituencies stands at 75 per cent when voting formally closed at 5 in the afternoon. The Election Commission would confirm the real figure of turn out only on Friday.    

Defying scorching heat, voters in large numbers were waiting in huge queues in front of the polling booths to exercise their franchise.

Long queues started even before the polling got off to a start in all the six constituencies Nagaon, Barpeta, Guwahati, Mangaldoi, Dhubri and Kokrajhar.

Barring some technical glitches, the polling was by and large peaceful.      

Around 94,37,731 electors were set to decide the fate of 74 candidates by voting in altogether 1,994 polling stations deploying 47,976 personnel in this phase.

Guwahati has maximum 18 candidates whereas Kokrajhar has minimum 6 candidates.

On the other hand, Guwahati has maximum number of 19,21,374 electors, whereas Barpeta has minimum number of 14,24,638 electors.

The main contest would be among the Congress, the BJP. But AGP and IUDF have also good support in some pockets. As many as 29 independent candidates are in the fray.

Counting will take place on May 16.
