A heavy exchange of fire during the ongoing eviction drive against the illegal settlers results in escalating tension along the Assam-Nagaland border in Karbi Anglong district on Sunday.
A casual worker deployed in the eviction drive died and two others sustained injury when unidentified miscreants from the side of Nagaland side opened fired on a team deployed in eviction drive against encroachers at a reserved forest on Sunday.
According to officials, the incident took place at Doldoli forest where miscreants fired from sophisticated INSAS rifles, light machine guns, rocket launchers and hurled bombs at the eviction team at Dikoibari
The police retaliated and heavy exchange of fire was continuing with the attackers firing from bunkers set up along the Assam-Nagaland border.
The labourer, who was hit on his shoulder, was admitted to Diphu Civil Hospital.
The district administration on Sunday claimed to have pulled down 150 illegally constructed houses during the operation.
The miscreants exploded bombs, hurled grenades and fired from rifles to halt the eviction operation but none was injured.
A total of 69 illegally constructed houses under Lahorijan border outpost, 300 under Dikoi (BOP) and 70 under Sankertilla (BOP) were demolished on Sunday.
Two SBBL guns, a car and several hundred roofing tin sheets were recovered from Sankertilla area.
