A 1.5 ft Water Monitor Lizard (varanus salvator) was rescued at Amjuli village under Harisinga P.S. in Udalguri district at about 11am Thursday. The lizard was spotted by a farmer named Atip Daimari while ploughing his paddy field.

Atip Daimari reported the matter to Girindra Nath Adhikari, DFO, Dhansiri Forest Division who suggested that the lizard be taken to the Shantipur Forest Beat Office at Shantipur near Corramore Tea Estate in Udalguri.

The lizard was ultimately handed over for release to Beat Officer Ela Daimari at about 4pm. Speaking to Assam Times DFO Adhikari said that the lizard rescued falls under Scheduled I and is most endangered. Applauding Atip Daimari’s effort he welcomed further such rescues and initiatives.
