Bihu festivity grips everywhere

Braving a biting cold wave Assam is engrossed in the Bhogali Bihu festivity. High rise bhelaghars and mejis made of straws, bamboo and wood are shinning in the open fields across the state. Women are busy with preparing beaten rice, pastries and larus to be served on the occasion.

“Our Bhelaghar is made of straw and bamboo in the type of the historic Rong Ghar. It would be ready by Monday,” said Arup Baruah a local resident of Gaurisagar who is busy with the task at an open paddy field.

“ We are completing the Bhelaghar like the titanic ship where we would celebrate the uruka on Wednesday evening,” Sachin Saikia from Puranigudam area in Nagaon district told Assam Times where he along with a group of people is giving the final touch.  

The Bihu falls on Thursday. People are busy with preparations for Uruka to be marked by feast on Wednesday evening. Fish, meat and vegetables are flooding the markets on the occasion. 

Early in the morning on Thursday the mejis would be set afire after offering pujas to the god of fire.
