Workshop on hydroponics at Nagaon

February 17:  Hydroponics is an approach of soil less agriculture where water is considered as the basic medium of plant growth with inputs of nutrient into water. This is an age-old technique, which was also the base of famous Babylon’s hanging garden. Presently, demand for hydroponics practices increases globally with the increase of population pressure on land and crisis of land.

Techniques of hydroponics provide opportunity for agriculture in small space along with scope for utilization of third dimension of space.  A workshop on hydroponics was organized by Centre for Science and Development Communication (CSDC) of Society for Socio-economic Awareness and Environment Protection (SSEAEP), Nagaon, in association with College of Education, Nagaon at College of Education, Nagaon on February 16.

Main objectives of the workshop was to popularize concept of hydroponics as educational tool to understand plant‘s growth and development, as an approach to agriculture and gardening and also as an opportunity for entrepreneurship. The workshop was inaugurated by the Ms Monasikha Baruah, Principal, College of Education, Nagaon.  Md. Jawied Alom , Coordinator of Nature Club of India, Patna  participated as the master resource person and Dr Dinesh Hazarika, Senior Scientist of Regional Agricultural Research Station of Silagani,Nagaon participated as the resource person. Programme was coordinated by Jayanta Kr Sarma, coordinator of CSDC of SSEAEP. The activities and deliberation of the workshop  covered  theoretical briefing about material and methods of hydroponics,  demonstration on different methods, film show on application of hydroponics, hands on practices on nutrient solution preparation, pot setting, medium management and plantation, along with group exercise on costing and pricing.

The workshop also highlighted the scope of application of hydroponics in flood affected areas of the state. Total 60 participants from different parts of Nagaon district participated in the programme including student of College of Education, Coordinator of Aryabhata Science Centre of different educational block of the district, individual teacher, farmers and unemployed youth.
