Discontent mars BJP prospect

A simmering discontent within Assam BJP unit has forced the party leadership to buy time to allow Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and his loyalists join the party.

According to the party sources, barring a senior member, the party leaders are averse to the move to welcome the dissident Congress leaders ahead of the assembly polls.

A section of the state leaders is believed to have sent messages to the party bosses in New Delhi to reconsider the move hardly a year before the assembly polls.

“The assembly polls are round the corner. We should woo the people. But if the party leadership remain indecisive, it would be difficult to hope any poll prospect.,” said a state senior party leader.

“Need of the hour is to boost the morale of the partymen. But if the uncertainty over someone’s entry exists it cannot proceed, said another leader who refused to be named before Assam Times.

Another senior party leader said, ”we are dead opposed to Dr Sarma’s entry who has an alleged background. If the party leadership really wants we can’t but accept him. But the party might have to pay heavy price in the assembly polls.”

To top it all, the party in rank and file is dead opposed to the former health and education minister’s entry forcing the party leadership in New Delhi to buy more time.

Last month a senior party national executive body member Pradyut Bora resigned basically in protest against the move to import Dr Sarma.

Notably, Dr Sarma who allegedly took money from Saradha boss Sudipto Sen has already been interrogated by CBI. The CBI team probing the chit fund scam further quizzed his wife Riniky Sarma who owned a private satellite news channel.
