One Dilip Kalita, arrested after charging with duping a landowner has been remanded to judicial custody on Sunday by the Kamrup district session court. The accused has admitted that he has been selling plots to many powerful people in the city of Guwahati.
The entire case came up when the dupped one Manna Hazarika who purchased a plot of land from one widow Chandra prabha Goswami in the Janakpur area in Jatia falling under Beltola mouza. The plot bearing Dag No 35/640 and Patta No 33/550 measuring one katha and 15 lecha belongs Goswami, a resident of Hatigaon purchased it in 1982.
According to information, Dilip Kalita approached Chandraprabha in connection with the plot and as she told that the plot will be for sale, he left her and started his business. He got published an advertisement with an English daily producing a fake power of an attorney in the name of Dilip Kalita. Responding to it, Manna Hazarika and Dhira Hazarika from South Sanania in Guwahati came to Kalita and agreed to the terms and conditions. The Hazarikas paid Rs 4 lakh in the form of two cheques from Guwahati SBI branch bearing Account Nos. 257635 and 257636 on February 18 and Rs one lakh in cash. On March 18, the parties went to the Narengi based land settlement office for registration. In the paper the lady’s signature was signed as Chandraprabha Goswami and it was mentioned that she received Rs 12 lakh in cash from Dhira Hazarika and Manna Hazarika.
The plot was later registered in the name of Dhira Hazarika. On May 13, Manna had just started construction work at the plot when trouble started two days later. Both the Hazarikas were at the site for inspecting the construction work on May 15, when Chandraprabha landed at the spot. She was taken by surprise at the construction work and reiterated that she was the actual owner of the land. An worried Hazarika and angry Goswami approached police with a complaint and Kalita was arrested on Saturday.
