The flood situation in the north Assam district remains unchanged for second day. More and more areas have come under the surging waters of the Ronganadi, Singarajan, Dikrong after these rivers breached embankments in seven places.
According to information, more than 1000 villages in North Lakhimpur district along with parts ofg Dhemaji have been submerged by the floodwaters. All sorts of surface communication in Bihpuria, Naoboisa, Dhakuwakhana and the adjoining areas have been remaining cut off from Saturday morning these rivers breached embankments in several places including Kakoi affecting a huge 10 lakh populace.
This has forced affected people, who have been rendered homeless, to take shelter on high places, railway lines and also on the National Highway 52. On Sunday morning some more portions of the vital road to disrupt all sorts of surface communication.
Several buildings and offices have also been submerged by the flood in the Lakhimpur township. These include Lakhimpur College, Lakhimpur Girls College, AGP(P) district office. Business establishments are remaining closed and the traders are shifting their properties to safer places.
There are reports more than 25 wooden bridges have so far been washed away by the flood waters in the entire district. Telephone and electricity services are remaining disrupted from early in the this morning on Saturday. In view of the alarming situation, the North Lakhimpur district administration has pressed army jawans to into rescue and relief services in the affected areas. From Saturday evening the district administration have been providing make shift camps for the homeless people with relief materials.
Meanwhile, the river Jiadhal has also breached its embankment resulting in the flash flood in Gohpur and its adjoining areas on Saturday night. On the other hand, a tea garden labourer Dilip Karmakar met watery grave on Saturday while the plot he was standing slipped to the river Bhugdoi in Jorhat district. Moreover, the water level of the river Brahmaputra is flowing above danger level in Jorhat.
