Scribes and former colleagues of Dipak Mahanta, who had recently died in a road accident, have organized a commemorative meeting at Guwahati Press Club on 12 December 2015 to pay tributes to the departed soul. Mahanta’s family and close relatives will observe his Adyashraddha same day in their Tezpur residence.
Mahanta, who was associated with AssamTalks, a city based satellite news channel, was returning from Jamugurihat to Guwahati on the night of 2 December and the vehicle carrying him with three other colleagues met a tragic accident at Deoshal near Jagiroad. Mahanta was taken to Guwahati Medical College Hospital, but the attending doctors declared him brought dead.
The untimely demise of Mahanta, a committed theatre director, an eloquent performer, a serious playwright and a passionate journalist with humoristic touches, was mourned by his colleagues and well-wishers across Assam.
Some of his popular plays include ‘Ulanga Roja’, ‘Malati Mem’, ‘Holi’, ‘Pinhole Camera’, ‘Gajapuria’, ‘Bhotaram Totaram’, ‘Aadipath’, ‘Dhaniramor Theatre’, ‘Kurma Avatar’, ‘Tejimola’, ‘Dhodar Alir Tender’, ‘Jadughar’ etc. Mahanta also prepared scripts for a number of documentaries relating to various socio-cultural issues.
He was involved as a working journalist with different newspapers like ‘Mohajati’, ‘Agnigarh’, ‘Boodhbar’, ‘Natun Dainik’ and ‘Asomiya Pratidin’. Lately he joined in NewsTimeAssam as a producer and started his television journalism career in Guwahati.
Mahanta’s commemorative meeting at the press club auditorium on Saturday will start at 1 pm and continue for two hours. Each and everyone who want to pay homage to him are requested, by the organizers, to attend the same.
