A BJP-led government is on the threshold in Dispur. BJP, AGP and BPF are set to form a coalition government in Assam in a day or two. The ruling party at the Centre has already announced Lakhimpur MP Sarbananda Sonowal as the chief ministerial candidate. The Union sports minister is taking a huge lead in Majuli while Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is expected to retain his home seat Titabor.
BJP alone is taking a comfortable lead in 48 seats while AGP is expected to get 17 seats and BPF will have to remain satisfied with 10 seats.
Congress camp is worried over the poor performance where state party president Anjan Dutta’s daughter who contested in Amguri was defeated at the hands of his AGP rival Pradeep Hazarika. Several top Congress leaders have lost the polls paving the way for the BJP and its allies. AGP president Atul Bora won Bokakhat defeating his nearest rival Congress candidate Arun Phukan. AGP leader and former chief minister Prafulla kUmar Mahanta won in Barhampur while Congress candidate and minister Rockybul Hussain won Samoguri.
