New trade registration system in Ukhrul town

In order to rein back commercial activities in Ukhrul district of Manipur, the Small Town Committee (STC) under ADC Ukhrul has introduced a new system for commercial establishments/shops and commercial vehicles/taxis within the district headquarters with effect from Saturday.

The move came after the Ukhrul ADC administration held a meeting on June 22 last.

Informing enforcement of the new system, STC/ ADC made announcements over the public address system in the town on Friday evening and Saturday morning.

The new system has come into force today and our target is to cover all commercial establishments and shops in the town within one month, an official of STC told The Peoples Chronicle on condition of anonymity.

According to her, as per section 33 (A) Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act 1971, different commercial establishments, shops and trades have been categorized as A, B, C, D and E according to the size/volume of their business.

Under the new system, all forms of business and trades are required to have registration at STC, the official informed adding that registration fee for category A and B has been fixed at Rs. 1000 and Rs. 800 with monthly taxes of Rs. 55 and 45 along with yearly renewal fee of Rs. 200 and 150 respectively.  For other categories like C, D and E including vendors, registration fees will be Rs. 600, Rs. 400 and Rs. 100 with renewal taxes of Rs. 120, 80 and 50, she disclosed.

Similarly, all commercial vehicles and taxis plying in the township must also register with STC and their registration numbers be given in black on yellow background, the STC official informed.

Even then registration for commercial vehicles might take some more days to open as certain procedures are yet to be finalized, she added.

In what could be a departure from the past trends, battle for Naga People's Front (NPF) tickets is likely to be either quite rancour-free or nonexistent, at least in two of Ukhrul's three assembly segments. This time around the party leadership is probably going to be free from any hassles in issuing tickets for 45-Chingai assembly constituency as Khashim Vashum of Tusom CV has emerged the lone candidate, so far, to seek the NPF ticket. That Khashim Vashum is emerging as the favourite to get favour of NPF leaders came to the fore when hundreds of his supporters, well wishers and public from contiguous villages of northern Raphei converged at Tusom CV playground and pledged their support for...
