Trucks escorted to Arunachal, economic blockade on

GUWAHATI: Trucks and stranded passengers were escorted to Arunachal Pradesh from Tinsukia district from Friday night even as the student bodies are yet to call off their indefinite economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh. ADC RC Duara said trucks, tankers and passenger buses were being escorted to Arunachal Pradesh and the subdivision was slowly limping back to normalcy.

However, Section 144 was still in place in the secluded subdivision. Officials of the subdivision and MLA Bolin Chetia held meetings at various places to pacify the agitating public.

Student bodies had announced an indefinite blockade against Arunachal Pradesh after eight people were wounded when tribals from the neighbouring state attacked a peace meeting at Shantipur of the subdivision last week.Two districts of Arunachal Pradesh – Dibang Valley and Lower Dibang Valley – are facing shortage of essential commodities in view of the blockade.The student bodies of Assam want Arunachal Pradesh to book the culprits involved in the attack.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the North East Students Organization (NESO), All Assam Students Union and Naga Students Federation was going on in Guwahati.The meeting is understood to have been contemplating on measures to resolve the border disputes and maintain peace along the border areas.

The boundary disputes between Assam and its neighbouring states like Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram have flared up recently, with armed clashes being reported from different areas lying along the border.

GUWAHATI: The City Police has arrested three persons in connection with yesterday's bomb blast in Bamunimaidam in which one person was killed and 24 others were wounded. A senior police official said: Champak Barman of Chamata, Biswajit Deka of Mangoldoi and Bhagaban Das of Basistha were arrested after we our primary investigation. Deka was the driver of the autovan (AS-01-R-1009) in which the powerful IED was kept. Guwahati: 1 kileld and 10 people were injured in a powerful blast at the Gate No 5 in Bamunimaidan area in the city around 11.45 am here today. DIG (CWR) GP Singh said: "The bomb, an IED, was kept at an auto-van. Another cylinder also got burst creating the situation more tense. Ten persons were injured out of which the condition of one is stated to be critical."The Gate No 5 is usually packed with labourers at the vegetable market. Guwahati: Black Widow commander Jewel's Garlosa's wife was gunned down by a group of youths on August 28 night at Didramkha under Maibong police station in Karbi Anglong district. Police sources said that the 24-year-old youngest wife of Garlosa, Bontha Thaosen, was killed while she was in his father's house.
