Flood situation grim in Kokrajhar, Chirang

Flood situation continue to be grim in many parts of Kokrajhar and Chirang district in Lower Assam with many areas still submerged under water. The rising water level of major rivers flowing downstream from upstream Bhutan and incessant rain has worsened the situation in many parts of the two districts. Several villages like Banglajhora, Saraguri, Janakigaon, Tattara, Kwirwguri, Balapara, Saralpara were flooded following the rising water level of Swrmanga (Saralangha) and its tributaries Longa which flows from upstream Bhutan.

The flood water have also breached a culvert at Janakigaon. Patgaon-Simbargaon PWD road were breached at several areas. Assam Minister Pramila Rani Brahma toady visited the flood affected villages. She said relief materials will be distributed.

The villagers complain that it’s been four days but there is no step from the administration in providing relief materials so far. In Gossaigaon subdivision in the district, the rising water of Bura Chara and Sankosh River have flooded many in and around Kashiabari area of Kachugaon block. Over a 1000 people are taking shelter at two relief camps were Relief Camp at Ghaksa and Kashiabari forest villages under Kachugaon Block. Total 717 people are taking shelter at Ghaksa and 493 at Kashibari. A senior official in Kokrajhar said the district administration is monitoring the flood situation in the district.

The situation in similar in Chirang with several areas flooded with the swelling Aie river and its tributaries – Nangalbangha, Khanamakra, Taklai- playing havoc. The rising water of Nizla river has flooded Santipur, 2 No Samodwisa, 4 No Samodwisa, Kusungdwisa, Nakedhara affected over 500 families. A relief was installed at Kaulabazar LP school. The army has been deployed in rescue mission at Chirang and provided rations to the relief inmates. A medical camp was also held for the affected families by the 7 Sikh Li Regiment of the army.

The villages alleged of no relief materials from the administration. Heavy erosion by Aie river continues in many parts like. The Nangalbangha river has washed away a portion of Sishubari Lower Primary (LP) school and damaged several acres of paddy in several villages like Nepalpara, Sishubari, patabari, Dolorpara, Khomabari, Sonapur, Udaipur, Choibari Gedhabazar, Khungkrakhora, Makgragami, Malipara and Gobdapara, etc. The river has also eroded several hectres of land at Nepalpara, Aie-Powali under Tukrajhar VCDC since the last few days.

The rising water of Aie also flooded Dangaigaon and Birhanggaon villages in Chirang. Meanwhile, Brahma said that soon eviction will be carried out in Kokrajhar district those who are residing illegally in the forest areas and some of the Chirang district illegal forest dwellers were evicted by the forest department.

Brahma said that Kaziranga incident on child injured has been providing treatment at Guwahati Medical College from forest department and two lacz compensation were giver to child.

Amid a strict security vigil, arrested Gujrat Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani was brought to Kokrajhar police station and later produced before the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) court. KOKRAJHAR: A Ganja smuggler was shot at by police in the Bishmuri area of Kokrajhar district late Wednesday night. The incident happened  in Kokrajhar in Bishmuri.
