Dissidence seems to have started resurfacing in Asom Gana Parishad posing a serious threat to the Sarbananda Sonowal Government.
Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and his lobby has been dead opposed to the Centre’s idea to amend the Citizenship Act alleging that the Act, if amended would allow lakhs of Hindu Bangladeshis to come to Assam. “It would be an insult to the Assam Accord if the state is allowed to bear more burden of the aliens,” said a close associate of Mahanta.
The Mahanta camp has virtually conveyed to the BJP leadership they won’t allow the historic Accord to be disregarded.
But Atul Bora, the AGP president, who is holding huge portfolios in the Sonowal cabinet is known for his tacit support to the BJP-led government’s decision. “Bora and his AGP cabinet colleagues have been quietly supporting the controversial moves only to grab the power,” said another close aide of Mahanta.
Another senior BJP leader told Assam Times that Bora has never talked to Mahanta to discuss the differences with the BJP leadership. But Mahanta has on many occasions alleged that the BJP leadership has never moved the party’s competent forum to discuss the issues where the regional party has some reservations.
Many AGP leaders and legislators have asked the party leadership to openly the discuss the controversial issues which need to be resolved amicably inside the party.
