Security forces start fanning in Jagun area in search of ULFA-I and NSCN-K a day after the dreaded rebels killed three Assam Rifles jawans at an ambush.
Army, police and para military forces have cordoned off a huge area conducting a combing operation against the rebels behind the ambush on Sunday morning.
According to reports, at least 40 ULFA-I and NSCN-K rebels have been camping in upper Assam to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations on Thursday. These rebels would target the security forces deployed in the vulnerable areas.
Local residents in large number have alleged excess in the name of the ongoing massive crackdown.
“Policemen and army jawans question us on the whereabouts of the ULFA rebels who ambushed the Assam Rifles vehicles escorting a team of foreign tourists on their way back from a winter festival,” said Jintu Saikia.
Another villager said,”security forces often charge us with sheltering the rebels which we find it difficult to admit. Why should we harbour the rebels.”
The Sunday’s attack was carried unitedly by CoreCom, a common platform of the north eastern rebels who jointly have given a boycott call to the Republic Day.
