Encounter claims life in Kokrajhar
KOKRAJHAR: An encounter incident took place in the Ultapani forest area along the Indo-Bhutan border area of Kokrajhar district on Thursday night that reportedly killed a person who was allegedly involved with extremist activities recently in Chirang district.
The deceased was identified as Sanjula Wary, 26, of the Sapkata area of the Gossaigaon subdivision.
Police arrested Sanjula Wary(26) of Kashiabari Dulagaon under Gossaigaon police station on Thursday. as per police, he was earlier a member of the NLFB Udalguri camp and had formed an extremist gang of about 10-15 members who were personally involved in the recent dacoity and firing incident at Bithani village under Amteka in Chirang district.
As per police, this operation was launched to retrieve looted money and gold ornaments. The operation started after midnight, when the accused led the police to the exact location where the looted money with gold ornaments was buried under a big tree and covered with some unused bricks. Suddenly, while he was supposed to bring out the looted money with gold ornaments beneath the tree, he also took out a loaded pistol that was also kept along with the looted material. He started firing at police from his pistol and fled into the jungle. Sensing this immediate danger to life and government property, police had no choice but to fire back.
During the shootout, the accused was hit. He was immediately recaptured and taken to a local hospital, but was declared dead on arrival by the doctor on duty, the police said.
Police recovered Rs.100,000 worth of suspected looted gold ornaments and a 7.65 mm pistol along with a magazine fitted with four rounds of live ammunition from his possession. The police team also seized four numbers of empty-fired cases of 7.65 mm ammunition from the spot.
SP Kokrajhar Vijay Prateek Thube said the police administration has been playing a strict role against anti-social activities in the district.
