Assam TMC Chief Calls for Immediate Action Against CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Over "Hate Speech"

In a recent development, the Chief of Assam Trinamool Congress (TMC), Ripun Bora, has demanded urgent action against Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. Bora's call comes after the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam Police takes suo-motu cognisance of a Supreme Court order, WP(C) No. 943/2021 of Ashwini Kumar Upadhaya Vs. Union of India & ORS.

During a press conference held at the party's headquarters on Monday, Bora emphasized that CM Sarma's comments about the Miyan community constitute a "hate speech" and violate Section 153(A) of the IPC, as outlined in the order dated April 28, 2023, passed in WP(C) No. 943/2021. Bora further revealed that he has written a letter to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, requesting judicial action against CM Sarma and the initiation of suo-motu contempt proceedings against the Government of Assam. The letter was sent on July 17, 2023, via email.

Bora expressed his concern over the impact of CM Sarma's remarks on the social harmony of Assam. The TMC leader strongly criticized the BJP and its leaders for engaging in divisive politics, highlighting CM Sarma's opinion that the Miyan community was responsible for rising prices of essential commodities and taking away job opportunities from Assamese youths.

In his press conference, Bora expressed his disappointment with the administration and the police for not taking any action against CM Sarma in the past five days. He called for swift action in response to the alleged hate speech and stressed the importance of upholding the principles of equality and communal harmony.

The demand for immediate action against CM Sarma by the Assam TMC chief adds fuel to the ongoing political discourse in the state, raising questions about freedom of speech, communal tensions, and the responsibility of leaders in maintaining social harmony. The coming days will shed light on how the authorities respond to these serious allegations and the potential legal consequences that could follow.
