Latest Update On Floods in Assam at 1200 hrs Wednesday IST :situation grim, CM orders relief measures. more than 24 people killed

Lakhimpur: The flood situation in the North Bank of Assam mainly the Dhemaji district has turned critical once again. Flash Floods in Ronganodi breached a vital dyke in four places of Lahimpur cutting off parts of Lakhimpur district and Dhemaji from the rest of Assam.

The temporary Bailey bridge constructed by the Army for connecting Dhemaji has also been damaged once again by floods. Reports have just come in on Friday morning that four more embankments have been washed.

The silver lining is that no causalities have been reported so far and there is no shortage of essential commodities as well.

Meanwhile the Brahmaputra is reported to be rising in various parts of the State.

Puthimari river in Goreswar washed away a large portion of a dyke at Harijhora in Goreswar. More than a hundred villages have got submerged.

Report at 500 hrs Saturday IST

Purhimari river breached another vital embankment near Rangia. There are chances that Train tracks and NH 37 may get flooded, cutting off Guwahati from the rest of India.

Meanwhile Encephalitis has also broken out in Lahimpur and Dhemaji due to the continuous floods and has already claimed 9 and 4 lives respectively. Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has intimated that the dreaded disease has already claimed around 55 lives this season.

Report at 800 hrs Sunday IST

The Brahmaputra and its tributaries continue to flow about danger level in most places. The situation in Dhemaji continues to be serious while the situation in Dibrugarh district is alarming. Guwahati is safe till now.

Report at 0800 hrs Monday IST

The overall flood situation in the state remained grim. In Guwahati, the Brahmaputra continues to flow above the danger level. Several villages have been submerged near Hajo and one boy has been reported to have been killed.

In Nalbari district, waters of Buradiya, Morapagladiya and Kanakhunda Jaan rivers have submerged several villages and agricultural land in western parts of the district

The flood situation in Nagaon district has turned serious as all the rivers Kolong,Kapilee,Yamuna,Nisharee,and Barpanee are flowing above the danger level. It is learnt that the Brahmaputra is flowing above 1.8 metres at Silghat and 1.7 at Hatimura which creates a serious
threat to Hatimura Bandh. Likewise Kapilee and Kolong are also flowing above the danger level 28c.m at Kampur and 20c.m at Raha respectively.

The floodwater of Kapilee has inundated most of the villages of Kampur area. Many places of Hojai sub-divison specially Daboka town have been highly affected by Yamuna river. It is just known at the time of
preparing this report that almost all part of the 36 national highway have gone under flood water.

The army has been deployed in various parts of the state. Dhemaji district remains cut off from the rest of the country.

Report at 2100 hrs Monday IST

The situation is alarming in Assam right now. 22 offical deaths have been reported from various parts of the state. The might Brahmaputra continues to rise and it’s a wonder that Guwahati Metropolis is still surviving.

In Goalpara, four people including three children died when a boat carrying them sank in the Brahmaputra on Monday morning, Two deaths have been reported from Dhubri and Kalgachiya. Dhemaji and Dibrugarh continue to reel.

Report at 2200 hrs Tuesday IST

A grim flood scenario has forced Dispur to deal with the situation on a war footing. Talking to the media people at Dispur after winding up an aerial survey on some affected districts, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that he had asked all district authorities to ensure relief and rescue in time.

According to Mr Gogoi, the situation is grim and the army jawans are airdropping essential items in the worst-hit areas of Dhemaji district.

Gogoi admitted that many people have lost their lives in the floods. On being asked about the allegations of shortage of relief materials, the Chief Minister made it plain that there is no shortage of relief materials and no reports of any epidemic in the affected areas. The government is also providing baby food to victims.

He further called for a thorough investigation into the causes of the recurring floods in the state saying this will take time but it is required in view of the recurring floods that have destroyed the state’s economy. Every year Assam still reels under the flood that renders millions of people homeless besides ravaging properties worth crores of rupee.

The Brahmaputra and its tributaries are still flowing above the danger level and some more new areas are coming under the surging waters.

On Tuesday afternoon floods washed away an important embankment in Barpeta district inundating at least 80 villages. Jiya Bharali breached another dyke near Tejpur and displaced 50,000 people overnight. National Highway 31 and 52 remains cut off as floodwater still flowing over NH in several places. Ancient tomb of Aajan Fakir at Saloguri Chapari in Sivsagar district is also submerged
