Govt negligence: Kampur Cooperative Sugar Mill in the death bed

The largest cooperative sugar mill in the entire Nort-East , Kampur Sugar Mill is at the death bed for a long time due to gross negiligence on the part of the authority concerned in general and the Govt. in special.

Commissioned in 1985 the construction work of Kampur Sugar Mill began as early as 1975 with a cost of 12 crores of rupees initially which increased by few crores at the time of completion.

After few years of regular production of quality sugar , the mill had to be stopped mainly because of mismanagement on the part of the corrucpted officials which eventually percolated down to disintegrate the employees who had to work without salary for months together.

When this correspondent visited the mill , it was seen that a pathetic situation prevails all around the Sugar Mill campus only to with anti social element. This is also alleged by a section of concerned people of Kampur that more than Rs 40 lakh sanctioned a year ago as preliminary works to revamp the mill has been misappropriated by some vested interests.

The socially conscious people of Nagaon district feel that an enquiry commission should immediately be set up to investigate into the circumstances leadind to the closure of the sugar mill and to bring to book the incompetent and corrupt officials responsible for the huge loss leading to the closure of the mill, otherwise the cooperative movement supposed to be the foundation of economic growth of a society would never flourish in Assam. It might be mentioned here that more than 600 employees were thrown out of work due to the closure of the sugar mill.

Now , the people concerned are waiting with expectations to see if the Govt. in general and two ministers from Nagaon Rokibul Hussain and Gautam Bora take any steps to bring life to the sugar mill.
