Police firing on protest rally in Diphu, several hurt
GUWAHATI: Several persons were injured when police resorted to fire on a protest rally organized by students activists in Diphu in Karbi Anglong district today. The protestors also damaged the town police outpost. Several police personnel had also been wounded.
The rally was organized to protest the relaxation of land policy for non-tribals in Karbi Anglong. More than 10,000 activists of various tribal students' organisations had gathered to protest the relaxation of several clauses pertaining to the ownership and transfer rights of land by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) to non-tribals in the district. To disperse the protestors, the police resorted to lathi-charge and then fired tear gas shells. Later, it fired five rounds in the air, The student activists' had earlier destroyed several shops belonging to non-tribal owners in Diphu and damaged more than 15 vehicles.

GUWAHATI: The City Police has arrested three persons in connection with yesterday's bomb blast in Bamunimaidam in which one person was killed and 24 others were wounded. A senior police official said: Champak Barman of Chamata, Biswajit Deka of Mangoldoi and Bhagaban Das of Basistha were arrested after we our primary investigation. Deka was the driver of the autovan (AS-01-R-1009) in which the powerful IED was kept. Champak and Bhagawan were cousins and they sold the autovan to some others."All the arrested were produced before the court today and sent to police custody.

Guwahati: 1 kileld and 10 people were injured in a powerful blast at the Gate No 5 in Bamunimaidan area in the city around 11.45 am here today. DIG (CWR) GP Singh said: "The bomb, an IED, was kept at an auto-van. Another cylinder also got burst creating the situation more tense. Ten persons were injured out of which the condition of one is stated to be critical."The Gate No 5 is usually packed with labourers at the vegetable market. Guwahati: Black Widow commander Jewel's Garlosa's wife was gunned down by a group of youths on August 28 night at Didramkha under Maibong police station in Karbi Anglong district. Police sources said that the 24-year-old youngest wife of Garlosa, Bontha Thaosen, was killed while she was in his father's house.
