Poetry book released

The book "পৃথিবীৰ কৱিতা" (Poetry of the World), edited and translated by Rajen Barua was released in USA on February 22, 2014 at a meeting of AALC (Assamese American Literary Circle) in Houston. The Meeting was held at the residence of Jeena and Rabin Mahanta. Barua gave a brief introduction of the book and read out a few of the poems from the book along with the English originals.

AALC was formed on May 12, 2012 by a group of like minded individuals in Houston to discuss literature in general and also share each others knowledge on various topics mainly related to language, literature, history etc. AALC plans to meet every quarter and this was its 5th meeting. The group has so far discussed topics such as 1) Short Stories of Saurav Kumar Chaliha and O' Henry, 2) The Life and Works of Mamoni Roysom Goswami, 3) The Life and Poetry of Hiren Bhatacharya, 4) The Significance of Mwamoria Bidrwh in the History of Assam, 5) Heroines of Assam History etc. This session was an open session where members read poems, articles they wrote, discussed issues related to Assamese language etc.

The book "পৃথিবীৰ কৱিতা" (Poetry of the World) is published in parallel texts of English and Assamese and covers a wide range of the classics of world poetry (more than 100 total) starting with the Creation Hymn of the Rig Veda to the poems of American poets Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost and beyond. It also includes samples of Chinese, Japanese, Persian and Spanish poetry.

Earlier the book was released in  Guwahati on January 3rd (2014) at the North East Book Fair by Manjumala Das with Gautam Prasad Baruah as Chief Guest.The book is available at Sabda Prakash (the publisher), Jorhat as well at Aak Baak and Jagaron in Assam.
