Shilabhadra passes away

Noted litterateur and Sahitya Akademy ward winning writer Reboti Mohan Dutta Chaudhory passed away on Friday night at a city hospital. For the 87 year writer of the Madhupur ArunTaangini, the end came at around 8-30 in the evening. Popularly known as Shilabhadra, Dutta Chaudhory was admitted in the hospital two weeks back in view of his old age ailment. He was born in 1924 in Gauripur in Dhubri district. He completed his graduation from Carmichael College in Rongpur and later did his mater degree in mathematics from the Calcutta Univrsity in 1946. He started his career as a teacher in Cotton College. After working as a journalist for a short spell of time he joined the Jorhat Engineering College as a teacher of Mathematics and retired in 1982. Right from 1940, he started writing---initially short stories and later novels. His maiden novel was Madhupur ArunTaangini. It was followed by Agomonir ghat, Abichinna and Prasir.

He was also conferred the coveted Sahitya Akademy Award in 1994. Before that he won the Assam Valley Award in 2001. He is survived by his wife and two sons. Asam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has expressed grief at his demise and said it’s a great loss for the state. Asom Sahitya Sabha President Kanaksen Deka also condoled the death.

Mohilary distributes land pattas

A total of 702 tribal families were given away land pattas, covering 300 bighas of forest land under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 under Chirang Forest Division at a function held at Dhunabari Lower Primary school in Chirang Tuesday. BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary handed over the papers in the presence of BTC Deputy Chief Kampa Borgoyary, Deputy Commissioner, Chirang, Virendra Singh Mittal, DFO, Chirang, Subash Chandra Brahma and Project Director Deba Kumar Kalita. PM steps down

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh put in his papers before the President on Saturday. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that he would quit taking moral responsibility of his party's dismal show in the Lok Sabha polls.
