Congress president Sonia Gandhi asked chief minister Tarun Gogoi to continue when the latter sought her permissiom to quit the office on Thursday. Top AICC sources told Assam Times that Gandhi refused to read the letter after Gogoi handed over it to her. Gandhi was believed to have told Gogoi that he was required in both the party and the state. Gogoi tendered his resignation owning moral responsibility for the party's defeat in the recent Lok Sabha poll where the ruling party managed to get only 3 seats out of 14.
