Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) has fervently requested the newspapers and news channels to avoid the description of family members while narrating an accused person in any case. Commenting on journalist Santanu Saikia’s arrest by the Delhi police today for his alleged involvement in leaking government documents to corporate personnel, the journalist forum appealed the media outlets to spare his parent’s name in the narration.
Saikia, who used to work for New Delhi based economic newspapers for many years, lately run a portal relating to the Petroleum sectors. The police suspect his role in procuring and later providing secret documents relating to the Petroleum ministry to some private companies for personal benefits. He, along with few others, was detained by the police yesterday for interrogation and reportedly found some vital documents from their possessions.
“For any reason, we are convinced that Saikia’s father and mother, who were Assam’s best known journalist and author contributing immensely to our society, were no way involved with the alleged unlawful activities. Hence their names should not be used in the description of Saikia in this unwanted case,” said a statement issued by the JFA.
