It was a homely meeting organized at Guwahati Press Club that witnessed the release of a travel fiction titled Ontarior Seuj Dalisat (Over Green Carpet of Ontario) and penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury in presence of several senior journalists. Inaugurating the book, Swapnaneel Barua, a scholar and also a senior bureaucrat of Assam, pointed out that the writer not only documented various events related to his visit to Canada, but also painted a humanist reminiscence with his created characters.
The function, held on 1 July 2015, was also addressed by senior journalists like Hiten Mahanta, Rupam Barua, PJ Barua, Mukul Kalita, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria and Pramod Kalita. Moderated by journalist Sabita Lahkar, the meeting was graced by acclaimed story writer Jyotish Sikder, professors Anup Talukder & Nirmali Medhi, singers Anindita Choudhury & Kishor Giri and Bitopan & Sneha. A prolific writer, Dr Raychoudhury is an associate professor of B Barua College, Guwahati and contributor to various Assam based newspapers and magazines. A smiling personality Dr Raychoudhury is also a regular participant in various radio programs and television talk shows. Published by Basundhara publication of Hatigaon in Guwahati, the book has 192 pages with a nice cover designed by prominent artist Padma Singha. It is priced at Rs 250/- per copy.

GUWAHATI:The Gauhati High Court on Friday asked the forest department and Kamrup(metro) administration to keep evicting the commercial structure in the Amchang wildlife sanctuary. In response to a formal appeal moved by the government, the court which temporarily stayed the eviction on Thursday said on Friday that only the settlers and their houses have come under the purview of the stay order. It allowed the authorities to keep evicting the commercial structures in the wildlife sanctuary.
TANGLA: Security forces claimed to have killed a dreaded ULFA-I rebel at an encounter in Udalguri district on Friday. The encounter is said to have taken place in a remote area near Tangla where a few rebels were believed to have been hiding. The fierce gin fight erupted as army and police launched the counter insurgency operation in the remote hamlet on Nalbari where Rajen Deka, a senior leader in rank of segment died on the spot. Others managed to escape from the spot and the security forces have cordoned off the entire area from early in the morning in search of the hiding rebels. NEW DELHI: In a major setback from the NDA the Supreme Court on Thursday straightly rejected the Centre's petition seeking extension of the deadline to publish the NRC draft. A division bench of the apex court comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice F A Nariman said for the last two years the deadline has been extended and therefore, there is no extension is admissible. NEW DELHI: The Supreme court is hearing a crucial petition on NRC on Thursday where the Centre seeks a period of six more months to publish the draft. A division bench of the top court comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice FA Nariman is hearing the Centre's seeking extension of the deadline to publish the NRC date till July 31,2018 instead of December 31,2017. The court which heard a set of more than 30 petitions relating to NRC on Wednesday is expected to clear its ruling on the validity of the panchayat documents to support citizenship in NRC.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its ruling on the validity of panchayat documents in the ongoing process to update the National Registrar of Citizens as it heard a set of 19 petitions relating to it. A division bench of the country's top court comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoiand Justice F Nariman heared the petitions onthe validity and competency of the panchayat certificates as supportive documents to update NRC.
