Assamese travel fiction released

It was a homely meeting organized at Guwahati Press Club that witnessed the release of a travel fiction titled Ontarior Seuj Dalisat (Over Green Carpet of Ontario) and penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury in presence of several senior journalists. Inaugurating the book, Swapnaneel Barua, a scholar and also a senior bureaucrat of Assam, pointed out that the writer not only documented various events related to his visit to Canada, but also painted a humanist reminiscence with his created characters.

The function, held on 1 July 2015, was also addressed by senior journalists like Hiten Mahanta, Rupam Barua, PJ Barua, Mukul Kalita, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria and Pramod Kalita. Moderated by journalist Sabita Lahkar, the meeting was graced by acclaimed story writer Jyotish Sikder, professors Anup Talukder & Nirmali Medhi, singers Anindita Choudhury & Kishor Giri and Bitopan & Sneha. A prolific writer, Dr Raychoudhury is an associate professor of B Barua College, Guwahati and contributor to various Assam based newspapers and magazines. A smiling personality Dr Raychoudhury is also a regular participant in various radio programs and television talk shows. Published by Basundhara publication of Hatigaon in Guwahati, the book has 192 pages with a nice cover designed by prominent artist Padma Singha. It is priced at Rs 250/- per copy.

In yet another huge achievement, police have captured a notorious ganja smuggler from Guwahati on Monday.Identified as Lalon Shah, he was arrested during a raid at his residence in Beltola on Monday night. Acting on a tip off, a CID team on Monday night conducted a raid at a building he recently got built in Beltola and managed to arrest the smuggler.The CID sleuths further have seized a huge quantity of ganji weighing 400 kg ganja from his residence. One after another incidents of fire seem to have rocked Guwahati during the last couple of days. Properties worth lakhs of rupees were ravaged when the college of veterinary science in Guwhati caught fire on Monday.The fire which is believed to have originated from the electric short circuit broke out in the microbiology department of the college at 10 at night.Five fire tenders took it three hours to bring the situation under control. There is no report of any casualty.    The incident took place 24 hours after a heritage building owned by former President of India Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed was gutted in fire in Fancy Bazar area.    
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday instructed power minister Pradyut Bordoloi to take immediate measures to improve the power situation by procuring additional power from other sources.Reviewing the state’s poor power scenario in the wake of low rainfall in the state with Bordoloi, Gogoi said that the situation must be improved even in the face of the draught like situation.He asked Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla to monitor the situation meeting with senior power department officials.Apart from Chief Secretary JS Khosla, Power Distribution Company Ltd Chairman Rajiv Yadav and Power Commissioner and Secretary Anurag Goel also attended the meeting.

Repolling passed off peacefully on in brisk note at the Barnijora booth on Monday.Defying scorching heat, 90 per cent voters exercised their franchise from 7 in the morning. The polling ended at 5 in the evening at the booth having around 450 voters.      A sensational rigging expose by a private satellite news channel forced the Election Commmission to order repoll in this booth under the Jalukbari assembly segment.Notably, a VDP member who got deployed outside the booth managed to go inside it and allegedly pressed the EVMM button on behalf of a few voters in full view of the polling officials on Thursday.
A lower court in Guwahati has remanded Kamal Medhi to judicial custody after the KMSS general secretary was produced before it on Monday.He was produced before it when the Kamrup chief judicial magistrate took up a petition moved by police seeking Medhi in their custody in connection with the Pranab Boro self immolation case where he was allegedly involved.Police arrested Medhi when he was on the way to surrender after the Supreme Court quashed his anticipatory bail.   
Silchar police have arrested the husband of a woman legislator on charges of domestic violence on Monday.He is none other than Jakie Jackob, the second husband of Borkhola MLA Rumi Nath.The social welfare officer was arrested immediately after his legislator wife Nath lodged a complaint before police alleging physical torture inflicted on her for failing to pay money two years after their marriage that evoked sharp reaction across the state.
