Altogether seven people including women and children died in a lightening incident in Barpeta sending shockwaves across the state on Saturday.

Amid thunder squall the lightening took place on a boat carrying at least 50 people on the river Beki in the evening where at least 21 others sustained injury.

The injured are battling for life at the Barpeta Medical College Hospital. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has expressed deep shock at the lightening incident and announced Rs 4 lakh each to the family members of those killed in the incident.

Intercity stop at Sarupeta

Good news for people of Sarupeta. Courtesy the Northeast Frontier Railway. From now and onwards, the Sarupeta station will be the regular stop for the Kamakhya-Alipurduar Intercity Express. Fear of horse trading looms large

The ongoing crisis in the Congress Legislature Party is likely to result in the recurrence of horse trading. This was what BJP MLA Manoranjan Das said on Wednesday. Gogoi faces wrath; effigy burnt

JINTUL TALUKDAR, BARPETA: Minority students are angry with the chief minister Tarun Gogoi who dropped border development minister Siddique Ahmed on Tuesday. Hundreds of the students hailing from the minority communities on Wednesday burnt the effigy of Tarun Gogoi at Kalgasia in Barpeta district for Siddique’s exclusion. Talking to Assam, the protestors said that Gogoi has insulted the minority communities by replacing Ahmed who has been making no less contribution for the uplift of the communities. They further threaten to launch statewide agitation against Tarun Gogoi anti-minority policies.    

Ripun dead oppose to dissidents

Amid simmering dissidence within the Congress Legislative party, a senior party leader has slammed a section of ministers and MLAs for demanding removal of Tarun Gogoi as chief minister saying that the party won’t allow them to do it. Baksa: Body recovered in Barpeta

Security forces recovered the body of Abu Bakar Siddique in Barpeta on Saturday evening 24 hours after the lemon trader was kidnapped by gunmen along with three others in Baksa district. Police have already picked up three persons in this connection. Simmering tension and anger have forced the authorities to step up securities in the entire area. Curfew is still on the Anandabazar areas under Gobardhana police station to deal with possible outbreak of violence. Curfew back in Salbari

Tension is simmering in Baksa forcing the authorities to clamp curfew a day after four lemon traders were believed to have been killed by NDFB-S militants after being kidnapped in the district on Friday. Talking to Assam Times, authorities said that  indefinite curfew was clamped in Salbari sub-division under Gobardhana police station fearing an ethnic flare up. Four local traders from Sorhog were believed to have been killed after suspected NDFB(S) militants kidnapped at gunpoint in Baksa district on Friday.   Security forces are desperately conducting an operation in search of the bodies of the four traders who were kidnapped from Labdangpara areas in the evening. Man killed by wife and son

In a bizarre incident that sends shocwaves across the state, a villager lost his life at the hands of his wife and son in Barpeta district on Thursday. The incident was beleived to have taken place at Kaharpara vlage in Niyananda area where 55 year old Kalicharan Kalita was beaten up to death by his wife Lalita Kalita and son Montu.
