Satyagraha in Golaghat

Hundreds of AASU leaders and workers hit the streets in Golaghat on Wednesday in protest against the Centre’s move to give shelter to the non Muslim refugees from Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Later they held a huge rally at the General Field premises where around 10,000 students vowed to fight the decision. 

AASU adviser Dr. Samujjwal Bhattacharya, President Dipankar Nath, General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi joined the mass rally and asked the Centre not to proceed with the deal.

Puja festivity grips Golaghat

Sounds of dhakis seem to have gripped the people of Golaghat as the entire district is preparing for the Durga puja from Wednesday. The idols of the goddess Durga are getting finishing touch before being installed in the various pendals. Puja pendals are joining an undeclared race for decoration with colourful electric lights to pull huge crowd. Jr Science Congress in Golaghat

The Junior Science Congress concluded in Golaghat on Sunday suggesting lots of scope for uplift of the scientific skills among the school students. Organized in Negheriting, many students district participated in the event and demonstrated their projects. Out of 32, only 10 projects were selected for the state level event in Titabor. These include two from the Golaghat Jatiya Vidyalaya. The projects belonged to Gitashri Barua, Debangona Goswami, Bhaswat Bhushan, Biswadip Saikia and Aditya Shankar Nath.  

Biker dead in accident

A pall of gloom descends in Golaghat when a bus rammed into a biker in the outskirt of the town on Saturday. The accident took place in Padumoni the speeding bus bearing No AS05-B-5309 hit the biker Mridupawan Hazarika who was on his way to Dergaon on his bike. Midupawan died on the spot and the bus driver managed to flee from the spot fearing mob attack.  

Durga puja alertness in Golaghat

The Golaghat police are all set to ensure peace and normalcy during the Durga Puja celebrations. The policemen in the town conducted a mock drill at the Golaghat Sadar Police Station on Friday. Police officials told Assam Times that every possible measure would be taken to avert untoward incident during the puja celebration. 

5 bikes theft from Golaghat

There has been steep rise in the number of theft cases in Golaghat town leaving the police force red faced. Five bikes have been stolen in this town during the last four days. But not even a single person has been caught so far.  

College employee commits suicide

A pall of gloom descends in the Debraj Roy College premises in Golaghat after an employee committed suicide on Friday. He was Sanjay Adhyapak who committed suicide by hanging himself inside the college campus to be discovered in the morning. In his suicide note he blamed grim financial crisis for his extreme step.  

CK Naidu Trophy from Saturday

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Golaghat District Sports Association is organizing Under 23 CK Naidu Trophy at the Golaghat Stadium from Saturday. Under 23 Assam team are taking on the Railways in the opening match at 8-30 in the monrning, said GDSA secretary Sanjeev Handique and Cricket Secretary Biswajyoti Barua.

BJP protest rally in Golaghat

Golaghat BJP unit workers hit the streets in the town on Thursday alleging scams, corruption and misgovernance by the Congress government in Assam. Hundreds of protesters took out a rally starting from the Bezbaruah HS School playground to the DC office premises where they staged dharn for nearly two hours. Jorhat MP Kamakhya Tasa along with party leaders Dilip Moran, Ajoy Konwer took part in the rally. 

Major fire in Golaghat town

Four buildings were reduced to ashes when a devastating fire broke out in the heart of the Golaghat town on Friday. Originated from a lamp at a prayer room at a residential building at Court Road in the afternoon, the fire rapidly spread to three adjacent houses belonging to Narayan Ghosh, Ajay Ghosh, Govind Ghosh and Ranjit Ghosh. All they deal in clothes.Local residents helped them managed to recover some clothes they stored for the Durga puja shopping.
