Ambubachi Mela

Devotees offering prayers to the Goddess Kamakhya as the temple door has opened today after four days at the Kamakhya temple premises, believed to be the center of the Hindu cult of Tantra in Guwahati on 25-06-08. Today is the last day of the ongoing annual four-day "Ambubachi Mela". Thousands of seers and pilgrims converged at the temple for the festival, which began on June 22.

please go through the local newspaper relased on 16/06/2009 Kamakhya temple closure GUWAHATI, June 15 – The Kamakhya temple will remain closed for four days from June 22 to June 25 on the occasion of Ambubachi Mela. The temple will reopen on June 26 morning for devotees, a press release received here today stated. No entry passes will be issued in respect of police, defence, military and paramilitary personnel for three days from the date of reopening of the temple in view of the rush of devotees, the release added.

ULFA fundung Bangladesh poll

The United Liberation Front of Asom is funding a god amount in the upcoming Bangladesh general election. According to Indian intelligence inputs, the banned outfit was funding in the general elections in Bangladesh to come closer to the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami league. ULFA has recently convened a meeting in an undisclosed location near Hawraghat in Mymeinsing district where they finalised the decision to fund a huge Rs 2.5 crore in favour for the Awami League. The ULFA leadership stayed in Bangladesh for more than 15 years at thanks to the favour of the power-that-be in the country. Details are awaited.

Road blockade on Sivasagar-Nazira road

Surface communication on the Sivasagar-Nazira road was left heavily disrupted as hundreds of people are blocking the road alleging lackadaisical attitude of the government. Thousands of vehicles are remaining stranded on the road and thereby disrupting normal life in the area.

Notorious drug mafia Pakhi Miyan escapes from judicial custody

In yet another major embarrassment for police, infamous drugs mafia Pakhi Miyan has escaped from the Guwahati Medical College Hospital at the dead of the night on Sunday where he was undergoing treatment citing some major health complaints after he was arrested a few months ago. He was captured by West Bengal police. Later he was rushed to Guwahati for probing some more cases pending against him including the murder of revenue intelligence officer Tarun Duta in Guwahati. Noted litterateur Rong Bong Terang has been elected the new president of Asom Sahitya Sabha on Sunday. The announcement to this effect was made by the state’s largest literary body came up at the Bhgawati Prasad Baruah Bhawan in Guwahati after the counting of votes sent by the district bodies ended. CBI team visits blast serial sites

A nine member CBI team on Sunday visited the blast sites in Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Barpeta Road as part of the initial probe into the October 30 serial bombing. Led by DIG P Kamraj, the CBI team has already visited the blast sites in the city of Guwahati. The team visited all the three blast sites in Kokrajhar where 20 died and 60 others injured. They visited Kokrajhar municipality office premises and saw the heap of mangled vehicles in the blast. NRC upgradation process in progress

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi says the work on the national register of citizens in Assam is nearing an end.Addressing press conference in Dispur on Saturday, Gogoi said the state government is waiting for the Centre’s nod to upgrade the modalities. Firing at SULFA, public clash in Namrup

There is report of firing when as the local people clashed with a group of surrendered ULFA rebels in Namrup in upper Assam's Dibrugarh district. Also, a motorcycle is reportedly being set on fire by an angry mob. The irate mod further set a SULFA camp afire. Situation is simmering.
