Students stage dharna demanding action on drug abuse

Students from greater Joypur area in Kokrajhar staged dharna demanding action to curtail drugs abuse in the society. Students gathered to stage dharna at Joypur bazaar along the JD Road in Kokrajhar under the banner of United Democratic Students Front today and shouted slogans demanding stern action on abuses of drugs in the district as well lower Assam districts.

The students and front have slammed state government for not taking any stern measure to check uses of drugs in the state, besides making proper initiative into the situation.They alleged that due to negligence of state government and district administration, uses of drugs is growing amongst the student community which has led to chaos in society.

Ansar, a student said, ‘We want early stop of drugs use in the society. The government should take strong check into use of drugs among society. Firm step should be taken to root out the attitudes of drugs use from society so that student community can get healthy living in days to coming’.

Apurna Narzary, an international women's football player, has been nominated for the Emerging Player award for 2022-23 by the Sports & Youth Welfare department of the government of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). Narzary has represented India in several international events and is the daughter of Biswajit Narzary of Khagrabari village in Kokrajhar district. The award will be presented to her during the Baokhungri festival celebration at Baokhungri Hill site near Harinaguri in Kokrajhar. Three individuals, including former MLA and senior BPF (Bodoland People's Front) leader Hitesh Basumatary, were arrested by police in Baksa district after a search operation at Basumatary's residential complex resulted in the recovery of a large cache of illegal arms and ammunition.
