In a move that fetches joy for Assam and its people, a top ranked ONGC officer from Assam will head the Oil India Limited.

He is none other than Utpal Borah who is all set to sit in the helm of affairs of the oil public sector unit.

Borah, now Executive Director (Asset Manager) ONGC, who has been finalized for the post of OIL chairman cum managing director is expected to join within this month.

OIL has been running functioning without a full-time CMD since July 1 last year.

Public sector top management personnel recruiter Public Enterprises Selection Board last year conducted two interviews to select its head where Rupshikha Saikia Borah was selected. But the Prime Minister’s Office rejected the selection. The MoPNG search committee shortlisted 15 candidates for the interview. These 15 include three Baruah and Anil Kumar Jain, Pramod Kumar Sharma, Rahul Dasgupta, Utpal Borah, PK Rao, Dr Ashutosh Karnataka, Saumendra Kumar Baruah, Dr Sunil Y Bharati and Bedanta Sarmah, Robin Deka, SB Buragohain.

Gogoi tables ‘populist’ budget

With a series of populist measures chief minister Tarun Gogoi tabled his state budget for 2014-15 in the assembly on Monday. Gogoi, who holds the finance portfolio read out his budget speech after the end of the question hours on the floor. His populist measures were on the expected line in the wake of his party’s humiliating defeat in the recent Lok Sabha polls hardly one and a half years before the assembly polls.         Gogoi refrained  from tabling his full fledge budget n March because of the general poll in April and May. Rapists nabbed in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh police have arrested three students on Sunday hours after they gangraped a teenaged girl bear a railway station.   Those arrested have been identified as Kalyan Dutta and Pranjit Dutta -- both graduation students of Lahowal College, and Karan Gogoi, a Higher Secondary student of Aniruddha Dev College.  Police are looking for Raju Gogoi of Lahowal College who also raped the girl. College students gangrape girl

 Four students gangraped a minor girl in Dibrugarh district on Sunday 24 hours after a youth killed a college girl in Nagaon. Sunday’s incident took place in the wee hours when the 15-year-old girl, along with a teenage boy, her next-door neighbour, had gone to Dibrugarh station to board the Brahmaputra Mail. The accused students caught the girl and the boy who accompanied her. The boy was thrashed and the girl was gangraped near the station to be rescued by a police patrol party. She was immediately rushed to the Assam Medical College where the rape was confirmed. Investigation is going on. ///

Naga body stresses border peace

A prominent Naga organisation warns the authority not to allow the outsiders to disturb the settlements of the Naga people along the Assam- Nagaland interstate border. Known as the United Naga Tribes Association of Border Areas,the organization raised a six-point resolution demanding immediate setting up of border guards in all border villages to protect the people and their land. The organization also demanded that all bilateral and tripartite agreements made between Assam and Nagaland be reviewed and settle the border dispute on the basis of historical facts. /

Sensational lead in Nagaon shame!

Some sensational revelations are believed to have come to light in the probe in to the gory incident of Nagaon where a local youth in a remote village killed a college girl on Saturday night. The incident that sends shockwaves and utter anger took place on Saturday at Kawaimari village under Rupahihat police station in the wee hours. The accused is her neighbor who stormed into her house hours before. The the body of the college girl belonging to the economically backward class was found from a jute field. Investigation was on.  

Withdraw agri farming tax: KCC to CM

The Kamrup Chamber of Commerce demands withdrawal of tax on agricultural farming in the soon to be tabled state budget. The major demand as steps to encourage the organic farming figured in the pre budget meeting with Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi who is presenting state budget in the assembly on Monday. KCC leaders told Gogoi that the withdrawal of tax on agriculture would will encourage investment in this sector. KCC wish list include cold storage in all the districts. Normalcy restores in Dima Hasao

Normalcy is back to Dima Hasao district after heavy landslide disrupted many areas in the hills district. People in large numbers who were stranded for several hours have gradually left for their destinations as rail and road communication is restored on Saturday. The worst-hit area include Jatinga, Retzoul, Dittokcherra, Bandarkhal along the Lumding-Badarpur Hills Section. Landslide wreaked havoc following incessant rainfall on Thursday forcing the authorities to deploy Assam Rifles and Territorial Army personnel to clear the debris.

Teok village strikes attention

 A tiny hamlet in Teok area draws the attention the entire country. The abode of 388 families in Jorhat will receive a rare honour at the Independence Day function at Kachari Maidam in Jorhat for exemplary pledge to end tobacco consumption habits among the villagers. 30 teachers suspended

The Hailakandi district administration has suspended at least 30 school teachers alleging dereliction in their duties. This was followed by serving show cause notice to deputy inspector of schools Nripen Das and block education officer Arun Singh for failing to rein in these teachers. The strict action took place when deputy commissioner Shamsher Singh was on his surprise visit to the Lakhirbond High Madrassa where 15 teachers were found absent. This has come a day after education minister Borodoloi gave hint of stern action against a section school teachers were delegating their work to others for commission.

AGP protest on Aug 14

 Asom Gana Parishad will continue to oppose the government’s anti-people policies.The Oppositio party leaders are scheduled to meet governor JB Patnaik on August 13 where they would submit a memorandum seeking his intervention.Further, AGP along with other like minded opposition parties will stage a sit-in demonstration on these issues on August 14.The regional party finalized it at an all-party meeting on Thursday at its headquarters in Guwahati.The meeting was attended by the representatives of the CPI, NCP, Samajwadi Party, UPF, CPI-ML, besides the representatives of the AGP.
