The incessant rainfall since the past couple of days has resulted in rise in waterlevel of river Nonai. The makeshift river bridge at Tia Phukuri ghat has been washed away on Thursday by the water resulting in disruption of communication. The area which falls under 65 No. Kalaigaon LAC the bridge is a vital link for inhabitants to travel to and fro from Kalaigaon to Khoirabari. The 70 years of Independence and even the change of guards in Dispur and Delhi has not changed the fate of the people who have been using makeshift bamboo bridges, boats and rafts made of banana tree trunks for crossing the river.
The surface communication has been disrupted since the bridge "disappeared in the deluge" on June 4.
"The bamboo bridge was built by local villagers with the help of activists of Paschim Nonai unit of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti(KMSS) this year said Bapan Sarma a moffusil journalist of the area. The washing away of bridge has greatly hampered the school and college going students, the agro-dependent villagers, traders and commuters. .
As of now, a permanent bridge, which is the need of the hour, remains a distant dream. "A pucca bridge is needed because rising river water has been regular feature every year here and a bamboo bridge can hardly withstand its onslaught," Sarma said.
