Sickening health sector in Namrup

At a time when one after another government claims to have changed the face of the state’s health sector, Namrup presents a different picture.

The huge area in Dibrugarh district has been battling for the minimum healthcare and medical facilities causing huge inconvenience for lakhs of people these days.

Even a single gynecologist is not available in the entire Naharkatiya area amid the much hyped schemes to encourage institutional delivery.

“We have seen a number of maternal death cases in the area in the absence of a gynecologist. A gynecologist is the need of the hour. Otherwise, no hope,” said Bittul Baruah, Dibrugarh district Ahom Royal Youth Federation president.

Hiren Gogoi, a local journalist said, “its really to have seen strange to have seen the absence of a gynecologist in Naharkatia with 1,89,778 population. Of them,  75406 women hail from interior areas who are forced to go to Dibrugarh or to the Oil India Hospital for treatment.”

The area with 41 villages and 8 tea gardens has some sub health centers along with referral unit health centres who keep functioning without minimum facilities. Will the government look into it at a time when it pins hopes on setting up AIIMS unit to uplift the sector.
