Its a big big day for regional politics in Assam. Despite stiff resistance the main Opposition Asom Gana Parishad on Tuesday announced its unification of regional forces with former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Pulakesh Baruah, Atul Bora, Pabindra Deka et al. The epoch-making moment came up when the regional party was holding its function to mark its foundation day in Golaghat where the party was born in 1985.
AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary announced unification of AGP(P) led by Mahanta, Trinamool Gana Parishad led under the leadership of Pulakesh Baruah and Atul Bora. All they shaked their hands with smiling faces mending all differences in the crowded function.
On the other hand, the All Assam Students Union leaders and activists across the state observed Betrayal Day opposing the home coming of Mahanta. The state's powerful student body has been protesting the entry of Mahanta terming him the betrayer besides being the man behind the infamous secret killings.
There are reports that AASU leaders and workers across the states blocked roads, staged dharna on Tuesday in protest against Mahanta's home coming. In several places, police had to disperse the AASU picketers for blocking the national highways.
But the united AGP leaders are confident the AASU would reconsider the decision. On Monday, AGP and its breakaway group AGP(P) leadership hoped that the AASU will leave the matter right now for an united AGP atleast to defeat Congress.

It is a fatal mistake for the party to once again welcome the betrayal leader. Once he was lost with dreams and fancies of his own but now he comes back to bring chaos in the party.The ultimate decision could be made by the people of Assam whether he will dynamic leader or betrayal.

The United Liberation Front of Asom on Monday makes it plain and simple that it is averse to hold any talk with the givernment in the absence of Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah who is still at large. Humancipation group under social project initiatives of Darwin School of Business (DSB) organise a seminar on human rights at Icon Academy on 11th January. Mr. Sawpon Dowerah, Principal of Icon Academy inaugurated the seminar and he elaborately spoken on various aspects of human rights. There was interaction with the audience after his speech. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is scheduledto call on Bangladesh Prime Minister on Monday who is on a three day visit to India. Two hardcore ULFA rebels were killed at an encounter with security forces in Assam on Sunday wee hours. The encounter took place at Khetri in the oitskirt of the city of Guwahati where securuty forces claimed to have seized a huge cache of explosives and weapons from the spot.
According to informaiton, a joint team of police and securuity focrces conducted an operation acting on a tip off that a three-member group of ULFA rebels was hiding in the area. The encounter lasted for nearly 30 minutes where the ULFA rebels died on the spot. One of the rebels, however, managed to flee from the spot. The deceased have yet to be identified.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday sees some sort of positive development in terms of talk with the government.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Saturday, Gogoi said talks minus ULFA Comander in Chief Paresh Barua is possible. The Chief Minister said, "we donot have a definite reply from ULFA but the signals are quite positive." He said the doors are still open and the government wants every body to be present in the talk. But he was quick to add "talks can still take place without Paresh Baruah."

A stunning revelation by an Bangladesh minister touches off a seismic wave of reaction across India two days before the arrival of Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina.
According to a ballestic revelation, former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf had a secret meet with jailed ULFA leader Anup Chetia during a visit to Dhaka. Quoting senior Bangladesh minister Ashraful Islam, a section of media reports that Musharraf came to Dhaka in July 2002 where he met Chetia at the Sheraton Hotel.
Chetia was arrested from Dhaka during the 1996-2001 Awami League regime and still is in custody despite the expiry of his jail term in connection with a case of cross-border intrusion.
