As Assam is going through a major upheaval to protest against the citizenship act to protect 'jati, mati and bheti' (community, land and base) of the state , the Dallas Assamese met on 21st December to show solidarity with Assam and protest against the .
The event took place at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Plaza. The group gathered around the statue of Mahatma Gandhi holding placards and Assamese "Gamusa" calling for a withdrawal of the act.
“We are here to say that we stand in solidarity with our Assamese brothers and sisters and all other students and people protesting across India,” said one of the protesters. Ankur Bora , an active member of Assamese diaspora expressing his views said that the act was a violation of Assam Accord.
“In eighties, we fought for our language, our heritage and our roots. Hundreds of Assamese died for this just cause and today this act has been imposed upon us. We have to act and fight, otherwise our identity is in great peril.
The Assam movement was a non-violent and peaceful agitation, and today we are standing with the iconic Gandhi statue in the spirit of peace and solidarity." The event on Saturday follows a series pf protests across the United States organized by Assamese diaspora.
