New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Dispur pins hopes on Chetia

Dispur is waiting for Anup Cheita’s extradition to boost the peace process with ULFA.In his response to a question on ULFA-government process, minister Rockybul Hussian on behalf of the home department informed the House on Monday that process was on to bring the jailed ULFA general secretary back from Bangladesh. He said that altogether 12 insurgent outfits operating in Assam have agreed to strike peace deal with the government.

Rhino census underway

The rhino census is set to end on Monday. The two-day exercise is being conducted in all the five ranges of the park — Kohora, Bagori, Burapahar, Agoratoli and Biswanathghat. More than 250 personnel from the state forest department, NGOs and media groups have been engaged in the operation.The headcount of rhinos in Kaziranga is a regular practice and is conducted to implement a fruitful conservation method. For the census operation, the park has been divided into two parts and 81 blocks. The remaining part on the northern bank of the Difolu, including the chapori areas of the Brahmaputra, is being covered on Monday.

Rhino poaching revisits Kaziranga

Despite round-of-the-clock vigil, rhino poaching refuses to die down in Kaziranga. Poachers in the famed national park  killed one more rhino on Saturday and the hornless body was rescued in the wee hours at Burapahar range of the world heritage site.The incodent took place hardly 24 hours after the hornless carcass of a rhino was found in the national park.

Drive against tinted glasses

Dispur on Friday directed the transport department to act against drivers and owners of vehicles using tinted glasses and solar films by the end of this month.A notification has instructed all district transport officers to take action against drivers and owners of vehicles using tinted glasses and solar films.The enforcement agencies of the transport department have been asked to launch a special drive from April 1, 2013 to suspend registration of vehicles with tinted glasses or solar films.

Bill to boost waterway

The UPA government on Friday moved a bill in parliament to declare a 121-km stretch of Barak river in Assam as National Waterway. It will aim at unified development of waterways for shipping, navigation and transportation of cargo to the north-eastern region.The National Waterway (Lakhipur-Bhanga Stretch of the Barak River) Bill, 2013 was introduced by Shipping Minister G K Vasan and upon enactment would particularly benefit Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh by facilitating cargo movement there.

Gogoi meets Sonia in Delhi

Crippling dissidence in Congress finally reached party high command. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday morning at the latter’s 10th Janpath residence. Gogoi who is arriving back in Guwahati in the afternoon apprised the party president of the stepped up efforts by the dissident legislators to unseat him.Gandhi is believed to have asked Gogoi to continue. She is expected to pass an order to APCC to stop dissident activities.Gogoi on Wednesday said that the reasons for discontentment of the disgruntled members of the Congress would be looked into.

Gogoi, Kalita meet Rahul

CBI nabs BRO official

A CBI team arrested a BRO official and seized Rs 15 lakh in cash from him in Guwahati on Wednesday.CBI picked up task Force Commandant Ram Milan was arrested from the Guwahati railway station. The money was actually a bribe paid by a private contractor.CBI received a tip off that Milan would be leaving for New Delhi from Guwahati.
