Baokhungri Festival 2025 Kicks Off at Baokhungri Hill in Kokrajhar

The 12th edition of the Baokhungri Festival began on Saturday with vibrant celebrations at Baokhungri Hill in Kokrajhar district, drawing a large gathering of visitors and devotees. The three-day event is being organized by the Tourism Department of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).

Held annually on the eve of the Bodo New Year—marking the last day of the Choitra month—the festival ushers in the Baisak month, celebrated as Rongjali Bwisagu or Rongali Bihu, with cultural fervor and spiritual significance.

The event was inaugurated by Dharma Narayan Das, Executive Member of the BTC, who opened the main festival entrance, marking the start of a rich cultural showcase.

One of the most sacred elements of the festival is the Baokhungri Hill trek, scheduled for April 14, during Sankranti. Thousands of devotees are expected to climb the hill to offer prayers to Lord Bwrai Bathou, seeking blessings for good health and the fulfillment of wishes.

Throughout the festival, traditional Bodo sports such as Khomlainai (Bodo wrestling), Ghila Gelenai, Dongfang Bukhunai, and Daobo Athing are being held, alongside cycling races and indigenous games that highlight the community’s athletic spirit.

The venue features numerous food stalls offering traditional Bodo delicacies, while cultural performances from various ethnic groups enrich the celebration, reflecting the cultural diversity and harmony of the Bodoland region.

Prominent dignitaries present on the opening day included BTC Executive Members Dabaisa Boro, Ranjit Basumatary, and Dhanajay Basumatary, along with Member of Parliament Rwngwra Narzary and MLA Lawrence Islary.

Beyond cultural celebration, the Baokhungri Festival serves as a platform to preserve indigenous traditions, promote community unity, and boost tourism in the region. Local citizens and organizing committee members are working diligently to ensure the event's smooth execution and grand success.

KOKRAJHAR: A road safety awareness proramme was held in Kokrajhar district on Thursday by district transport office (DTO), Kokrajhar to create awareness on accident and traffic control in the district. Students from the different colleges participated at the programme. As per official records of the DTO Kokrajhar, there were 148 cases of accidents reported and 69 persons dead in Kokrajhar district in 2018 itself. DTO Kokrajhar Dhajen Basumatary said that the progremme was organised out to create awareness and alertness among the young generation.

Heroin smugglers arrested

KOKRAJHAR: Kokrajhar police apprehended two heroin smugglers from Kokrajhar town late Tuesday evening in a search operation. Kokrajhar police conducted a search operation at one house along the Ganga Hall Road and seized 58.9 grams of heroin. Two persons were apprehended. They were identified as Rinok Narzary (25) of Muthambil Soraibil of Gossaigaon and Mondip Narzary (24 year) of Habrubari under Kokrajhar police station.

KOKRAJHAR: Darangamela MCLA in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Bijit Gwra Narzary is going to take oath and secrecy of the office as executive member of BTC on Wednesday at a programme at BTC Legislative Assembly auditorium hall in Kokrajhar. Narzary has been inducted as executive member in place of Deben Boro, who was in charge of the Handloom & Textile and Sericulture department in the BTC. KOKRAJHAR: Security forces apprehended six hardcore cadres including deputy finance secretary of the National Democratic Front of Boroland-Saoraigwra faction (NDFB-S) from Ripu Reserve forest, Kokrajhar district early Monday morning. Child molester arrested

KOKRAJHAR: A tuition master has been arrested for allegedly molestating of minor girl in Kokrajhar town on Sunday evening. According to family, a 9-year-old girl went for tuition class at the nearby house under the Ward no.2 along with her classmates in the morning around at 8 am. The tuition classes ended at 10 am and other students were allowed to go their houses by 10 itself. But the victim girl was kept inside tuition hall till 12 pm. Boy trampled to death by wild elephants

KOKRAJHAR: A young boy was trampled to death and  a woman left seriously injuried by wild elephant within 24-hour at Bijni in Chirang district on Friday. According to local peoples, a 12-year-old young boy child was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants at Bishnupur along the India-Bhutan border area under Bijni police station in Chirang district on Friday morning. A herd of 4 wild elephants from nearby Manas National Park were approaching the village in search of foods where the incident took. The young child died on the spot. Five arrested for carrying cattles illegally

Five persons were arrested by te police for illegally carrying cattles in five trucks on Thursday morning at Karigaon national highways in Kokrajhar district. Police intercepted the trucks carrying 80 cattles, including 14 buffaloes during the petrolling in the 31C National Highways. The trucks were bound for Nine Mile, Guwahati from Pandipara and Sonapur of West Bengal. The cattles were purchased by Pioneer Livestocks. During the checking, Pioneer Livestocks and truck drivers failed to show proper documents.Police later seized the trucks and the cattles.
