Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee Backs Moran Autonomy Demand, Seeks Clarity on Indigenous Definition
The Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee has extended its support to the demand for autonomy by the Moran community and urged the Assam Government to formally define who qualifies as Indigenous peoples in the state.
Speaking at the 57th Foundation Day celebration of the Moran Students Union held at Raja Ramakanta Samannay Khetra, Doomdooma, Chow Pallav Shyam Wailung—General Secretary of the Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee and Advisor to the All Assam Maan-Tai Speaking Students’ Union—called upon the government to immediately fulfill the long-standing demand for the creation of a Moran Autonomous Council. He emphasized that the Moran community deserves authentic and legitimate rights that must be safeguarded.
Wailung also reiterated the demand for the Assam Government to declare a constitutional definition and official list of Indigenous peoples of Assam, in alignment with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), 2007. He noted that India, along with 144 countries, had endorsed the UNDRIP to protect the rights and interests of Indigenous communities under the Indian Constitution.
