Bhupen Hazarika awarded Asom Ratna

Renowned maestro and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee Dr Bhupen Hazarika received Assam's highest award Assam Ratna at a solemn function on Thursday evening.

The Assam government sponsored award, first of its kind in the north eastern states, was given away by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who appreciated the maestro for his outstanding contribution to Assam and India.

Receiving the award, Dr Hazarika, known for his evergreen lyrics Tothapito Huwanai Klanta, said his flying mind confines not only to Assam and India saying he belongs to the world. Right from Barak Hussain Obama to the small fries across the planet, he said he sang for all.

Several artists performed Bhupendra Sangeet at this function which made the evening a swashbuckling one.

at last the state goverment of assam has done an wonderful works to confer the award Asom Ratna to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. actually it should have to do many years ago. The people of north east should be presurised to central govt. confer the Bharat Ratna to Dr. Hazarika.

The Supreme Court is expected to decide on the fate of death convict Mahendra Das on Thursday. The country’s apex court is set to deliver the crucial judgment on the Special Leave Petition filed by Mahendra Nath Das where he has pleaded that his death sentence should be commuted to lifer. His mercy petition was rejected by the President after an inordinate delay of 12 years and plea for commutation to life imprisonment on this ground was dismissed by the Gauhati High Court.
Amid tight security, the Assam Assembly begins its budget session from Thursday. The month-long session opens with Governor JB Patnaik’s speech. A set of crucial bills are expected to be passed in this session. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is scheduled to table the state budget for 2012-13 financial year on March 12.

Sivasagar police have arrested 3 pro talk ULFA cadres on extortion charges in the hear of the town. At least five people sustained injury when suspected ULFA exploded a powerful grenade in Guwahati on Tuesday. The incident took place in front of the Assam state BJP office in the busy Zoo Road at around 6-10 in the evening. The city based NEMCARE Hospital in association with Guwahati Press Club has organized an all women health check-up camp on March 4 next. The health camp will start at 10 am and continue till 2 pm.
