Reckless driving kills 1, 2 injured
People of Kalaigaon have raised serious concern at the frequent deaths of innocent pedestrians near Outala village, due to reckless driving. Taking advantage of the good road condition between Halouchouka and Murphuli Chouk (approximately 6 km ) on Kalaigaon–Rangamati road, most teenage drivers and bikers used to drive at high speed causing serious consequences to people.
Such an incident had occurred at Akelibari village on April 26 at 5 pm, where Gitima Deka, a five years old daughter of Lambo Deka, inhabitant of the village Akelibari was killed on the spot by a speeding Tata Winger bearing registration No. AS-13A / 9286. According to eye witnesses, the girl had been sitting by the road side at the time of the incident. The fast moving Winger had crushed down other two cyclists named Khanindra Bania and Tarun Deka of Mangaldai before hit the innocent girl. Both the cyclists were seriously injured. The irate people of the locality had burnt the vehicle before police and fire brigade arrived. They also blocked the road stopping vehicular traffic.
It has also been alleged that any person could procure driving licenses from the DTO offices of Darrang and Udalguri districts by paying bribes of rupees one to two thousand, without appearing driving tests.
